He was a hog framer from Iowa and said he’d done it before and said he would do it again, and he did.
A few weeks ago I got together with Marcia who is 88 years old and grew up at White Eagle (formally Vos resort) from 1939 to 1989. We sat down with another guest, Kelly who has family ties and history with our resort and lake vermilion dating back over 50 years. We had a lovely time pouring over old photos that Kelly brought with her taking a little trip down memory lane. Just as we were about to end our visit, Marcia pulled out a few eyebrow raising stories that I couldn’t believe!
Apparently, every week the Vos family would host a Thursday evening fish fry in the main lodge with pot luck style meals to share with all of the resort guests. It was a wonderful way for everyone to get together each week in community. Marcia spoke fondly of their time together on these special days. Usually it was a fun, family friendly affair- until it wasn’t.
A few days prior to the weekly picnic Marcia and her husband, Don were talking with one of their guests who admitted that he felt he was living somewhat of a “boring” life as a hog farmer in Iowa and he recounted a story where he had streaked right though downtown Iowa City. He wanted to know if they had ever had any streakers at the resort.
Surprised, they said no and jokingly encouraged him, thinking he wouldn’t actually follow through. After some teasing throughout the week from Don and likely some liquid courage, the fellow decided to join the weekly picnic sans clothing. It was quite the spectacle, a grown man running quickly though the main lodge and back to his cabin to hide for the remainder of his vacation (about 1.5 more days).
So yes, this family friendly resort has been the host of many surprising, eyebrow raising occasions that we would have never guessed.
For the record, we don’t encourage streaking—and to our knowledge, it’s never happened again (though we can’t be 100% sure).
