Top Three Hikes on Lake Vermilion

Lake Vermilion Family Activities

While Lake Vermilion is known primarily as a world-class fishing destination, it also offers some fantastic hiking opportunities. With miles of beautiful trails winding through the forests and along the shoreline, hiking at Lake Vermilion is an excellent way to explore the natural beauty of the area. In addition to the hikes outlined below, White Eagle Resort has a lovely beginner/intermediate trail loop through the woods on site at the resort called bear paw path. This trail is ideal for families with small children because there are spots along the trail to build forts and rest. Another great feature of the trial is that it is dog friendly. The trail head for bear paw path is located between cabins Timber jay and Night Hawk.

One of our favorite hiking destinations on Lake Vermilion is the black bay peninsula trail. This 2 mile interpretive trail as well as six mile advanced trail takes hikers on a scenic tour of black bay peninsula. Along the way, hikers can enjoy beautiful views of the water and surrounding forests, beaver ponds, as well as the opportunity to see wildlife such as deer and bald eagles. Bring a picnic lunch to enjoy before or after the hike at the lakeside picnic tables.

Another great hiking or biking option near Lake Vermilion is the Mesabi Trail. This 132-mile trail runs from Grand Rapids to Ely, passing through a variety of beautiful natural landscapes along the way. For hikers staying at Lake Vermilion, the trail can be accessed at a number of points, offering the opportunity to explore different sections of the trail depending on your interests and ability level.

For those looking for a more challenging hike, the Vermilion Gorge Trail offers a strenuous 3.4-mile trek through some of the most rugged and beautiful terrain in the area. The trail winds through the Vermilion River Gorge, offering stunning views of the river and its many waterfalls. Use caution when hiking this trial with pets and children as there are no guard rails along the edges of the Gorge.

No matter which trail you choose, hiking at Lake Vermilion is a wonderful way to connect with nature and experience the beauty of the Northwoods. Whether you’re an experienced hiker or just starting out, there are plenty of options available to suit all levels of ability and interest.

In addition to the excellent hiking opportunities, Lake Vermilion also offers a number of other outdoor activities, including fishing, boating, and kayaking. With its abundance of natural beauty and recreational opportunities, Lake Vermilion truly has something for everyone. So why not plan your next outdoor adventure at this stunning Minnesota destination and experience all that it has to offer?
