Someone recently asked Tom how long he had been working at the resort and his response was “since I was six” they laughed like he was joking, but he wasn’t…
Of course at six Tom was only in charge of age appropriate tasks such as taking out the trash, raking leaves and picking up an endless supply of pine cones for his grandma who would pay him a whooping penny per pinecone! He was thrilled and picked up as many as he could, making several dollars, which was enough to fund his ice cream treats for that Summer.
As Tom got older, he would spend his mornings homeschooling and afternoons working with his dad in the cabins. They worked together to repair old cabins and build new cabins. Through this, Tom learned all of the ins and outs of construction but also what it took to own and operate the resort. It was a way of life, and he naturally found a rhythm of work and play that resonated as home. One that he would later crave after spending seven years flying commercially for the airlines. One that would inspire him to give up his career in aviation and move back home to take over the family business at the age of 29.
Fast forward 11 years. Tom is living out his dream of raising our daughters in this tranquil northern escape. He spends his days working on cabin projects and operating the resort while raising our children echoing his childhood.
